On our way south we have three barriers to cross: the roaring forties, the furious fifties and the cold sixties. Currently, we are in the roaring forties with gusts of 25 knots that are entertaining us a lot.

Since this morning we have been sailing at an average speed of 20-21 knots. On deck there is plenty of water but (thankfully) not cold. The temperature is colder but nothing alarming.

“Take care of your polar fleece, because you might well need it” says Xabi with his “this is not cold” face.

Although we are still fighting, Jean Luc and Iker are quietly calm. Obviously both want to win but know that is a long leg and there are storms and compressions ahead.

There is plenty of water on board, more than at any other leg. But it is also true that it is a boat and that we are sailing at 20 knots; and someone has to bail out the water.

It is hard work that requires a lot of concentration. Because when you finish and you suddenly realise that there is some water in the boat, you know that in an hour everything will be flooded.

On board everyone is fine and we are very focused on sailing as fast as possible. We’ll get to Cape Horn in 6 or 7 days depending on the ice limit and its movement.
