We are fighting neck and neck for the third place with Dongfeng as we enjoyably sail downwind. In 15 to 18 knots, we cover miles to the southeast towards New Zealand.
The MH0, J2 and J3 propel MAPFRE. Conditions are great to be on deck enjoying the sun, the wind and just a bit of spray.
At approximately 23:00 UTC we heard thuds under the deck, and we immediately knew it was him. Only King Neptune arrives in such fashion, shouting and raging to take his toll on the rookies onboard MAPFRE.
You could tell they felt intimidated by him. King Neptune (Rob Greenhalgh) came out and took the two guys to the aft. Among laughter, some hair cutting and rotting food smearing, the latter being a special request from some of the rookie’s best friends, Rafa and Willy were baptized, and today they pride themselves on being Shellbacks.
The truth is that it was a nice moment, which we all enjoyed a lot. Now there are two new haircuts on board. Willy decided to shave his head and Rafa bears Neptune’s marks on his.
We will be entering the Doldrums soon and expect a sail change tonight, as the wind will drop a lot. We are all really focused on our battle with Dongfeng competition and anxiety hang in the air. A shift benefits us; then the next one is for them. Each watch is like a four-hour regatta.
