Dongfeng and MAPFRE in the Southern Ocean © Jen Edney/MAPFRE/Volvo Ocean Race

Dear Southern Ocean,

Your energy and strength is relentless. We’ve made it through your gybing party and I must say, there are a lot of tired, wet and cold bodies on board.

You’ve kept us close with our competitors on Dongfeng, pushing and watching us cross each other in close distances three times today. I hope you enjoyed the show; we thought we’d bring some excitement to your party.

The gybing party seems to have come to an end and the temperature has dropped significantly. Survivals suits have come out to help protect against the icy waters blasting the crew every few minutes. The chill is seeping into our bones down below.

Unfortunately we have lost a few of our coffee mugs to you, some of our most coveted items on board and now we guard the sole survivor of this travesty with great care to help get us through the next 7-8 days.

You keep bringing new surprises our way and my crew continue to push through them. They are incredible athletes; they take great care of each other and push harder when you do. They came prepared to party with you.
