At 16:32:20 UTC today, Thursday 29th March, the Spanish boat MAPFRE informed the Volvo Ocean Race’s Race Control, that they had taken the decision to suspend racing six miles west of Cape Horn, to make repairs to the mast track, as well as to the main sail.
As foreseen before the start of the leg in preparation for such cases, three of the MAPFRE shore crew were in Chile and are currently travelling from Port Williams (Chile) by boat to a meeting point, to undertake the necessary repairs with the crew.
The aforementioned meeting point is located alongside the Isle of Freycinet, belonging to the Hermite Islands in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, where MAPFRE is currently heading.
According to race rules, MAPFRE must stop for a minimum of 12 hours before they can continue racing, from the same point where they had advised of their decision.
