A 2,800-nautical mile crossing in total, predicted to take nine days. On our second day at sea conditions are mild with a good wind, crossed waves and a 2knot current in our favour.
The boats are sailing close to each other, and as it usually happens during the first days of a leg, we all in sight of each other. Abu Dhabi and Dongfeng are in front and to windward, SCA behind. There have been fewer positions changes than sail changes. We’ve gone from the J1 to the Fractional and we taken reefs on and off between watches.
We’ve been straight line sailing so far, heading to 100º-110º towards the east. The sunlight is changing extremely fast and the UTC time we refer to onboard constantly gets more familiar and easier to follow.¡
Night fell and the boats around us looked like a Christmas tree decorated with red and green lights. Those are nice details, as are the stars, especially the shooting ones, which you can see if conditions allow. The creepy fog we left American waters in is gone. Sailing at night is not as stressful anymore.
The water temperature rose from 11 to 19 surprising degrees, and it’s much nicer. The cold doesn’t hurt anymore, and it’s easier to go through the night.
