British sailor Robert Greenhalgh will be one of the watch captains on board “MAPFRE”. The Spanish team has confirmed it today in Cape Town (South Africa), where the In Port race will be held next Saturday the 15th.
Greenhalgh is a very well-known sailor, who will sail his fourth Volvo Ocean Race. He won the race in 2005-2006 on board “ABN AMRO ONE” and was second with “Puma” in the 2008-2009 edition. Last time he competed in the race was in 2011-2012, being part of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing crew.

Today is the third day of the Spanish boat “MAPFRE” in Cape Town. Three days of work on shore to have both the boat and crew ready for the next leg. The aim of the team is to improve their performance and result.

The Spanish boat crossed the finish line at 13:47:32 hours Spanish time after sailing the longest last few miles without any wind. “SCA” made the most out of this situation and crossed the finish line ahead of the Spaniards, who are already thinking about Leg 2.

Finally the day arrived. As expected, at exactly 14h00, the first leg of the Volvo Ocean Race started in Alicante and the first few miles of “MAPFRE”, the only Spanish boat in the starting line of the around the world race. After an eight-mile coastal race in front of the city of Alicante, Iker Martínez’s team heads towards Cape Town and in first place.

The Volvo Ocean 65 “MAPFRE” will be the one who will defend the colours of Spain in the new edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. It was confirmed today, Friday, by the insurance company MAPFRE and Pedro Campos, the team’s CEO.
