Thousands of fans came out to follow the start of Leg One of the round-the-world race. 1450 miles lie ahead of the fleet between Alicante and Lisbon, in which MAPFRE will do everything in their power to have the best possible start to the Volvo Ocean Race
Sunday 22nd October sees the start of the first leg of the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18. At 14:00h the seven teams will set off on the 1450 nautical miles from Alicante to Lisbon, competing for the first points at stake in the round-the-world race.
An extra dose of motivation but remind we can’t get too confident, this race is extremely long!
MAPFRE, skippered by Xabi Fernández, entered the port at 00.30 UTC on Thursday morning
At 11:49h this morning MAPFRE crossed the finish line in Cabo de Gata. Race Management had announced just a few hours earlier, that the leg between Lisbon and Alicante would be shortened due to lack of wind in the Mediterranean. The boat, skippered by Xabi Fernández, is due to arrive in Alicante at approximately 06.30am on Thursday.
