Biography

He’s been sailing in the 49er class alongside Xabier Fernández since 1999 where he has notched up the most important results of his sporting career. Iker is a standard feature in the team line-up, having been part of the team since its founding back in 2000.
A natural Olympian (Olympic Champion, three-times World Champion, three-times European Champion in the 49er class) Iker Martínez was onboard the “movistar” VO 70 for the 2005-2006 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, calling the tactics for the inshore racing. Iker was also driving when, on April 6th 2005 the “movistar” crew set a new world speed record by sailing 530 miles over 24 hours at an average of 22 knots during a training session. After that he got ready for the second Olympic medal of his career, a silver in the 49er class in Beijing, following a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

But there has been more. He was back in the ocean sailing in the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009. As co-skipper onboard “Telefónica Blue”, Iker and the crew were third overall. They won four inshore races (Alicante, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Stockholm), two legs (Kochin-Singapore and Singapore-China) and two scoring gates (Fernando de Noronha (Brasil) and St. John’s (Newfounland, Canada).

He finished the Volvo on the 27th June 2009 and the 9th of January of 2010, once again together with Xabi Fernández, won his third World Championship in the 49er class. His latest offshore challenge was the Barcelona World Race 2010-2011, where he and his co-skipper Xabi Fernández finished in a well-deserved 2nd position.

Since 2013, he sails in the new olympic class: Nacra 17.
