After a historical come-back in the last few days of sailing, MAPFRE today claimed victory of the eighth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, to recover leadership of the general leaderboard in the round-the-world race.

A new MacGyver-style chapter for MAPFRE. On Sunday, the eighth day of sailing on this new leg from Itajaí to Newport, the Spanish boat informed of an electrical problem, which they had previously suffered in Itajaí two days before the start, and which had reappeared, “In the Boatyard they thought that it had been solved, but it obviously wasn’t,” in spite of swift action and replacing all the parts in Brazil.
At 17:00 UTC (14:00h locally) the start gun sounded for a lengthy and particularly tricky 5,700 nautical miles from Itajaí (Brazil) to Newport (United States).
